Oh Mur, how I will miss your sarcastic wit, that deep straight-faced stare when I knew you were busting up inside (often at my expense), and how you so smoothly set me up time and time again. However, I always knew that under that sarcastic sense of humour, was a man with a heart of gold who always had my back (and the back of every First Nations student in Ontario). He pushed and prodded me to see issues from every perspective, and waited patiently for me to “come around” before shaking his head and laughing before going out to have a cigarette. We met in 2005 as members the Chiefs of Ontario’s FN Education Coordination Unit, and continued to keep in touch throughout his several changes of employment and short-lived retirements, texting each other just several weeks ago.
My wife Barbara and I send our deep felt condolences to his family, particularly his wife who made many visits to Akwesasne to try her luck at the casino, which allowed Murray and I to visit and catch up, and to his daughter Mindy, who I met and worked alongside on several projects that her father roped her into.
